5 FaceBook Source Code Secrets

I glanced over the Facebook source code for both index and search pages. As an enterprise developer of some experience, source code is always interesting to me as it provides an insight into the health of a company. The interesting highlights of the Facebook code are:

1. Facebook writes pretty clean code & maintains coding standards. The code is readable.

2. To Facebook coder: Calling a function to do the magic isn't an example of clean code; in response to Facebook coders comment - "Holy shit, is this the cleanest fucking frontend file you've ever seen"

3. Facebook doesn't do MVC. There isn't any separation of concerns as far as I could see. It is also not a designer's job. It is created by developers with tons of procedural PHP code.

4. Facebook also doesn't do much object oriented coding either, at least it wasn't apparent from these source files. It is plain and simple procedural code.

5. Facebook uses templates which is nice.

It does some interesting stuff with advertising, specifically estimates the length of page and attributes to determine advertisements to show. There are few interesting ideas here.

Did you expect more? There isn't much more really, take a look yourself. I wonder if MySpace's code is as clean.

How to See the Album of Any Private User

Facebook has grown stupendously popular over the years. As you probably know by now that we have discussed 10 ways to connect facebook to other social networking media and Top 30 Newest Facebook Apps to Brighten Up 2009 and people liked it. Today we are here with a different intention.

While privacy is a thing of assurance for some, it is annoyance for most. So here is a trick that will help you to see any locked profile. This trick will let you see anyones tagged photos even if they are private for you.

Trick

Step1: Log into facebook and don't worry about making another account. They will not be able to trace you down and ban you.

Step2:

  • Find the person's unique profile ID.
  • Search for them and click view friends or send message.
  • Write the unique ID from the address bar (only the numbers) or copy it somewhere else.

Step3: Now that you have your unique profile ID you can use the next two links to view a total of 40 tagged photos:

If you wish to see tagged photos added by others use this link:

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=12345678&op=1&view=all&subj=[Unique ID]&id=[Unique ID]

If you wish to see tagged photos added by themselves use this link:

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=13245678&op=1&view=user&subj=[Unique ID]&id=[Unique ID]

Each link contains two places for [Unique ID] you simply replace this with the persons unique ID that you have copied at the first step.

REMOVE THE BRACKETS IN [UNIQUE ID] .. replace that whole thing with the profile ID you copied.

Step4: You can now see up to 40 photos of someone on a private profile. Enjoy.

Why Facebook..??

reasonIf you are not already on Facebook, you might want to get with the program while its free and before it becomes too complex for nonusers to try and understand. Over 34 million people are members of Facebook and speak a foreign language to nonmembers who are simply trying to keep up with the name of the social internet website. Ive heard, What is it, myface, spacebook, facebook?

Facebook is constantly evolving and as a member myself, I dont know all the perks because its updated frequently and new applications are added daily. Facebook has become something like an addiction for many users and when compared to its launch in 2004 as a tool to connect Harvard University students with each other, Facebook is a networking community gone wild and heres why.

The Facebook Platform

There are over 3,500 applications on Facebook that allow members to personalize their pages and interact with friends. Top Friends is very popular, allowing users to display favorite friends on their page. And the Moods application is fun too, because it allows users to update how theyre feeling using visuals.

But if all you want to do is display your mood, pictures and friends profiles then you might want to stick to Myspace.

The Facebook Platform, available since May 24 of this year opened a huge door to a gigantic space for facebook members and developers. Facebook Platform gives a template for developing applications that use Facebook features. This means companies can expand their relationship with consumers to the walls of Facebook, but only if they can come up with applications that get the attention of target users.

Marketers have a new option, but it wont be that easy to stand out in the midst of thousands of other applications that users can choose from. This is where the chaos goes into overdrive because the life span of a Facebook application on a members page varies while users are constantly updating and upgrading their pages by downloading and deleting applications as their moods change.

The Facebook Platform makes way for who knows how many more applications that will continue to advance as companies are able to modify the website with new technology. Im sure there are a few users out there who ignore notices of new applications and stick to traditional facebooking, but Id bet theyll get suckered into at least one of the thousands that poke them the right way.

RSS-Really Simple Syndication

Facebook is now using RSS with more than its news and mini-feeds that keep users up to speed with activity on their networks. The website allows companies to use RSS to determine target Facebook users and to send their messages through creative applications and advertising.

Members can add applications like RSSBook to their profile, which gives a directory of news and information feeds that users can subscribe to. And this is only the beginning of the Facebook community and RSS.

SMS-Short Messaging Service

SMS allows Facebook members to send and receive cellular text messages from their page, and companies like Intomobile are taking advantage of this technology while users now have the option of being available to facebook friends even when not logged on to the website.

SMS along with RSS feeds and the Facebook Platform are stretching the capabilities of Facebook and there is plenty of space to roam. The bottom line is facebook continues to get trickier and more complex each day. Its a networking playground and I plan to keep up with its advancements, as well as those of other social networking websites because Im curious to know what millions of people are getting themselves into.

Mark 'Facebook' Zuckerberg

mark zuckerbergMark Zuckerberg, (born May 14, 1984) is an American computer programmer and entrepreneur. As a Harvard student, he created the online social website Facebook, a site popular among students worldwide, with fellow computer science major students and his roommates Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. He serves as Facebook's CEO. He has been the subject of controversy for the origins of his business and his wealth.

Time Magazine added Zuckerberg as one of The World's Most Influential People of 2008. Zuckerberg fell under the Scientists & Thinkers category for his web phenomenon, Facebook, and ranked 52 out of 101 people.

Zuckerberg launched Facebook from his Harvard dorm room on February 4, 2004. It started off as just a "Harvard-Thing," until Zuckerberg then decided to spread Facebook to other schools and enlisted the help of roommate Dustin Moskovitz. They first spread it to Stanford, Dartmouth, Columbia, Cornell and Yale, and then to other schools with social contacts with Harvard. By the beginning of the summer, Zuckerberg and Moskovitz had released Facebook at almost forty-five schools and hundreds of thousands of people were using it.

Zuckerberg was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity while at Harvard.Zuckerberg moved to Palo Alto, California, with Moskovitz and some friends. To date, he has not returned as a student to the college. They leased a small house which served as their first office. Over the summer, Zuckerberg met Peter Thiel who invested in the company. They got their first office during the summer of 2004. According to Zuckerberg, the group planned to return to Harvard in the fall but eventually decided to remain in California.

Facebook Financial

financeFacebook received its first investment of US$500,000 in June 2004 from PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel. This was followed a year later by $12.7 million in venture capital from Accel Partners, and then $27.5 million more from Greylock Partners. A leaked cash flow statement showed that during the 2005 fiscal year, Facebook had a net loss of $3.63 million.

With the sale of social networking website MySpace to News Corp on July 19, 2005, rumors surfaced about the possible sale of Facebook to a larger media company. Zuckerberg had already said he did not want to sell the company, and denied rumors to the contrary. On March 28, 2006, BusinessWeek reported that a potential acquisition of Facebook was under negotiation. Facebook reportedly declined an offer of $750 million from an unknown bidder, and it was rumored the asking price rose as high as $2 billion.

In September 2006, serious talks between Facebook and Yahoo! took place concerning acquisition of Facebook, with prices reaching as high as $1 billion. Thiel, by then a board member of Facebook, indicated that Facebook's internal valuation was around $8 billion based on their projected revenues of $1 billion by 2015, comparable to Viacom's MTV brand, a company with a shared target demographic audience.

On July 17, 2007, Zuckerberg said that selling Facebook was unlikely because he wanted to keep it independent, saying "We're not really looking to sell the company... We're not looking to IPO anytime soon. It's just not the core focus of the company."

In September 2007, Microsoft approached Facebook, proposing an investment in return for a 5% stake in the company, offering an estimated $300500 million. That month, other companies, including Google, expressed interest in buying a portion of Facebook.

On October 24, 2007 Microsoft announced that it had purchased a 1.6% share of Facebook for $240 million, giving Facebook a total implied value of around $15 billion. However, Microsoft bought preferred stock that carried special rights, such as "liquidation preferences" that meant Microsoft would get paid before common stockholders if the company is sold. Microsoft's purchase also included rights to place international ads on Facebook.

In November 2007, Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing invested $60 million in Facebook.

In August 2008, BusinessWeek reported that private sales by employees, as well as purchases by venture capital firms, had and were being done at share prices that put the company's total valuation at between $3.75 billion and $5 billion.

In October 2008, Zuckerberg said "I don't think social networks can be monetized in the same way that search did... In three years from now we have to figure out what the optimum model is. But that is not our primary focus today.

Facebook Flatform

A social networking site founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg. It initially targeted Harvard students, but was later opened to other universities and then high schools. In 2006, Facebook allowed everyone to join and also added a News Feed feature that would broadcast changes in members' pages to all Facebook users identified in their personal network of friends. It turned Facebook into a personalized social news service.

The name of the site comes from the paper document often issued to college freshmen to help them get acquainted on campus.

Facebook Platform
In 2007, Facebook introduced its application platform to software developers. Within a few months, thousands of programs were available for enhancing a Facebook page in myriad ways such as sharing certain Facebook information with selected friends as well as collecting and sharing multimedia, humor, games, sports, blogs and classifieds. See Facebook Platform.

Facebook Beacon Social Ads
In late 2007, Facebook introduced its Beacon social advertising program, which tracks Facebook users who visit the advertisers' sites. Ads are then targeted to the friends of these users indicating that their friend has taken some action such as purchasing a product, renting a video or signing up for a service. The system was launched as an opt-out service in the beginning, causing enormous controversy. It was later changed to opt-in.

Thefacebook History

The advent of Facebook came about as a spin-off of a Harvard University version of Hot or Not called Facemash. Mark Zuckerberg, while attending Harvard as a sophomore, concocted Facemash on October 28, 2003. Zuckerberg was blogging about a girl and trying to think of something to do to get her off his mind.

facebookAccording to The Harvard Crimson, facemash "used photos compiled from the online facebooks of nine Houses, placing two next to each other at a time and asking users to choose the hotter person." To accomplish this, Zuckerberg hacked into the protected areas of Harvard's computer network and copied the house's private dormitory ID images. "Perhaps Harvard will squelch it for legal reasons without realizing its value as a venture that could possibly be expanded to other schools (maybe even ones with good-looking people ... )," Zuckerberg wrote in his personal blog. "But one thing is certain, and its that Im a jerk for making this site. Oh well. Someone had to do it eventually ... " The site was quickly forwarded to several campus group list-servers but was shut down a few days later by the Harvard administration.

Zuckerberg was charged by the administration with breach of security, violating copyrights and violating individual privacy and faced expulsion, but ultimately the charges were dropped. The following semester, Zuckerberg founded "The Facebook", originally located at thefacebook.com, on February 4, 2004. Everyones been talking a lot about a universal face book within Harvard, Zuckerberg told The Harvard Crimson.

.I think its kind of silly that it would take the University a couple of years to get around to it. I can do it better than they can, and I can do it in a week.

.Membership was initially restricted to students of Harvard College, and within the first month, more than half the undergraduate population at Harvard was registered on the service. Eduardo Saverin (business aspects), Dustin Moskovitz (programmer), Andrew McCollum (graphic artist), and Chris Hughes soon joined Zuckerberg to help promote the website.

In March 2004, Facebook expanded to Stanford, Columbia, and Yale. This expansion continued when it opened to all Ivy League and Boston area schools, and gradually most universities in Canada and the United States. In June 2004, Facebook moved its base of operations to Palo Alto, California. The company dropped The from its name after purchasing the domain name facebook.com in 2005 for $200,000.

Facebook launched a high school version in September 2005, which Zuckerberg called the next logical step. At that time, high school networks required an invitation to join. Facebook later expanded membership eligibility to employees of several companies, including Apple Inc. and Microsoft. Facebook was then opened on September 26, 2006 to everyone of ages 13 and older with a valid e-mail address. In October 2008, Facebook announced that it was to set up its international headquarters in Dublin, Ireland.
